Board of Directors

A board of nine directors governs Medical Assurance Society (MAS). Their role is to ensure that high quality service and sound business practice are at the forefront of every business decision, allowing MAS’s relationship with its Members to grow and prosper. The board approves MAS’s strategic objectives, annual budgets and the overall framework within which business is conducted.

 

Richard Tyler, Chairman

Date appointed: 28/07/80


Richard is a Wellington-based GP. He is also Chairman of the Wellington Independent Practitioners’ Association Ltd and on the boards of Compass Health Ltd, Greater Wellington Health Trust and Capital Primary Health Organisation. Richard has expertise in the management of primary health and primary healthcare organisations and is MAS’s medical adviser for underwriting on Medical Life Assurance and personal health.

John Isles, Deputy Chairman

Appointed 27 July 1988

 

John is also based in Wellington. He is Chairman of Interweave NZ Ltd, a Director of PSIS Ltd, Woolyarns Group, PrimePort Timaru and KiwiFM and on the Rulings Panel of the Electricity Commission and the Advisory Board of the West Coast Development Trust. He has expertise in commerce, public policy and Maori land issues.

Katie Ayers

Appointed 25 June 2008

 

Katie is a paediatric dentist in Hamilton, with expertise in paediatric dental public health and dental workforce issues. She is also Director of Acka Health Limited and the past president of the New Zealand branch of the Australian and New Zealand School of Paediatric Dentistry.

Howard Clentworth

Appointed 27 July 1989

 

Howard is a specialist in obstetrics and gynaecology at Boulcott Hospital in Lower Hutt. He is also Chairman of the board of Boulcott Clinic and Director of Digital Impressions.

Anna Fenton 
Appointed 26 May 2004

 

Anna is an endocrinologist with expertise in gynaecological endocrinology, metabolic bone disease and bone density assessment. Based at Christchurch Women’s Hospital, she is also Director of Canterbury Bone Specialists Ltd and Signet Research Ltd and a member of the PTAC Osteoporosis subcommittee.

Lewis King

Appointed 9 September 1997

 

Lewis is a GP in Mairangi Bay, Auckland, with special interests in musculoskeletal medicine and acupuncture. He is also Director of Procare, the former secretary of the Royal New Zealand College of GPs and former chairman of the New Zealand Medical Association.

Helen Rodenburg 
Appointed 4 Septmeber 1996

 

Helen is a GP in Wellington with expertise in primary healthcare. She is a Trustee of Capital PHO and on the board of the Island Bay Medical Centre.

Michelle Smith

Appointed 5 September 2007

 

Michelle has expertise in global investment banking and asset management along with associated regulatory and compliance oversight. She splits her time between Christchurch and Wellington and is also Director of Thornton Fahey Limited (London) and a Trustee of the Christchurch Arts Festival.

Craig Thompson

Appointed 25 July 1990

 

Craig is Wellington-based and Chairman of Accent Group Limited and NRS Media Group Limited. He is also Director of Woolyarns Holdings Ltd and Curtain Supermarket. He has expertise in commerce, especially finance and marketing.
