About us
Medical Assurance Society (MAS) may be new to you, but we’ve been looking after professional people’s financial needs for a long time. MAS can help you with everything from insurance and loans to savings, investments and business advice at every stage of your personal and professional lives.

A Society for professionals

MAS is a membership-based society for professional people. Because we have experience dealing with professionals, we understand the specific needs you have. Traditionally we’ve drawn on the health professions and their families for the majority of membership. Over time, it has been our privilege to extend services to a wider range of professionals. Today, more than 20,000 Members trust us with their business.

Financial strength

Our finance subsidiary, Medical Securities Limited (MSL) has an A-/Stable rating from approved rating agency Standard & Poor’s*, and a guarantee under the New Zealand Government deposit guarantee scheme. Our general insurance company, Medical Insurance Society Limited (MIS), also has an A-/Stable rating from Standard & Poor’s.

Our history

MAS was set up in 1921 by a group of doctors who felt that insurance companies weren’t meeting their needs. As a mutual, we can take a long-term and conservative approach to managing the risks we undertake on behalf of Members. Over the years as membership has expanded, we’ve offered more and more of the products Members need, tailored to busy professionals.

Governance

MAS is governed by a board of nine directors. Our Chief Executive Officer is Martin Stokes.
